New User with some Questions

Postby sflaherty » Mon Jun 22, 2009 10:43 am

So I’m a new user of Secutor and have a few questions to start.

Our company is testing an application to see if it can run under the FDCC configuration and also to see if it makes any changes to the FDCC configuration when it is installed/uninstalled.

Our strategy is to use Secutor Prime Standard to get a baseline report on the FDCC VHD, then install the software and run Secutor Prime Standard a second time and compare the two reports to see if installing the software (using an Administrator account) makes any changes to the FDCC configuration.

We’re finding that when we run Secutor Prime Standard (with the latest updates) the FDCC XP VHD from April 8th 2009 is failing on some of the benchmarks. I would think that the latest VHD from NIST would pass 100%

Also, not sure you can help with this, but how do we run Windows Update with the FDCC VHDs since Activex controls are disabled? This would fix a lot of the bechmarks that are failing.

Thanks!

Hi Sean,

We've gone back and rerun several tests against the April 8 XP VHD. We're finding that the image scores 100% on the compliance items.

There are failures in the patch checks, but this is to be expected. The first failed patch is MS09-010 which is from the first Patch Tuesday following the release of the image.

The NIST website notes that images are released quarterly, so there will be at least 2 months where the VHD does not have latest patches installed.

As for the ActiveX control to allow updates, as you mention... we're not the authority on this. For testing purposes, you can enable the control to run Windows update, then disable it for assessment.

Hope this helps,

-rob

Thanks for the answer. We did end up unblocking ActiveX controls and were able to update the image to get it to close to 100%

Thanks!
